What were Viking shields made of?
Historical Viking shields were typically round and measured between 24–36 inches (60–90 cm) in diameter. They were constructed from planks of linden, fir, or poplar wood — chosen for their lightweight yet strong properties.
At the center, an iron boss protected the warrior’s hand while allowing mobility in combat. The shield face was often painted with Norse symbols, animals, or geometric patterns, sometimes representing clans or personal identity.
